Exploring Complex Situations Collaboratively - Foundation

This half-day course will introduce learners to a life-cycle approach to managing an intervention: the action of becoming intentionally involved in a complex situation, in order to improve it or prevent it from getting worse.  It will introduce learners to the concepts of systems, thinking, practice and practise within the context of a collaborative intervention – working across and between organisational boundaries, including how our own choices, psychology and modes of working affect the changes we seek to make.

We will consider a number of tools and techniques to assist us in working with others; consider the role of language in shaping our thinking and behaviour; consider ‘navigating in the fog’ as a metaphor for a collaborative intervention; and ‘an explorer’ as a simile for a systems thinking practitioner intervening in a complex situation.

We will introduce a seven-stage systemic lifecycle as an aid to planning and managing interventions, as well as a set of key activities and issues relevant to each of the seven stages.

We will work as a plenary group sharing questions and perspectives, and the results of using some of the tools introduced in a safe online learning environment.

The training is facilitated by Simon MacCormac, a systems thinking practitioner with more than 30 years’ experience.
