The Future of Systems Thinking - 'fireside chat' at SysPrac25

September 2025

Patrick and Mike held an informal 'fireside chat' on the future of systems thinking, blending humour with serious reflection. They traced the development of the field using adoption life-cycle models, noting the shift from early innovators and visionaries to a broader, more risk-averse early majority. A central theme was the tension between accessibility and depth: for systems thinking to reach mass adoption, it must be simplified and commoditized, but over-simplification risks stripping away its richness and effectiveness.

The speakers compared established methodologies—including Soft Systems Methodology, Viable System Model, System Dynamics, and Critical Systems Heuristics—acknowledging their proven value but warning against ossification. They argued that methods must continue to evolve through action research, where theory and practice inform each other.

The panel also discussed AI’s potential role: while it could enable more effective coordination and insight, it poses risks if it replaces rather than supports human thinking and agency. The conversation touched on challenges around bridging academia and practice, overcoming branding issues in communicating what “systems thinking” means, and fostering institutional demand for systems approaches.

Ultimately, they agreed that systems thinking is in greater demand than ever, driven less by academic advocacy and more by the world’s growing complexity. The key challenge is to maintain its diversity and integrity while making it usable and relevant for wider audiences.
