A cybernetic perspective on service provision in medium-sized enterprises – current status of implementation in the company and outlook for the research project

September 2025

The author is leading a project at her employer's company that aims to transform the traditional hierarchical organisational structure of the owner-managed business into a cybernetic model based on Stafford Beer's Viable System Model (VSM).
The planned contribution to SysPrac will first briefly outline the genesis of the project and the implementation steps achieved so far in the company. The second part of the contribution will provide an outlook on the current research and dissertation project, which focuses on the empirical investigation of the possible effects on work and process performance. The aim of these investigations, which combine qualitative expert interviews, panel surveys and a quantitative evaluation of operational performance indicators, is to empirically demonstrate the practical applicability and effectiveness of the VSM within the framework of integrated and data-based organisational management.
The author's research interest generally addresses the increasing complexity, volatility and dynamism faced by manufacturing companies and explores the extent to which the introduction of a cybernetic control model can achieve systematic improvements in process and work quality as well as a reduction in organisational complexity.
The aim of this coontribution is to obtain suggestions and comments on the completeness and usefulness of the approach through professional exchange.
