Review and Close: Building an inclusive systems practice community

September 2026

This closing panel reflected on the conference and the community it brings together. Participants valued its warmth, openness and breadth, describing an event shaped by shared inquiry and conversation rather than a single set of expert voices. The range of perspectives—from apprentices and experienced practitioners to academics—created room to explore systems thinking in different ways and to learn together.

Speakers discussed how SCiO might develop as a professional body, including the possibility of an ethical code and ways for members to shape its governance and future. They emphasized that a thriving community depends on active participation: welcoming newcomers, making volunteering accessible, supporting peer learning and creating opportunities to practise together. Suggestions included restarting small learning circles and giving members more space to contribute to the organization’s work.

The panel also considered how to extend systems thinking beyond the conference. Participants argued that communication matters, but that the most persuasive way to share the approach is to work alongside people on real challenges. This requires an inclusive environment where people can join without already knowing the jargon or feeling they must prove they belong. As the community grows, the conversation turned to the capacity needed to sustain its work, including whether a volunteer-led organization can continue to expand without additional professional support. The panel closed with an invitation for members to help shape SCiO and carry systems practice into their own settings.
