Square Pegs, Round Holes, and Rich Pictures: Following the Situation Rather than the Method

September 2026

One of the challenges I have encountered as a Level 7 Systems Thinking Practitioner apprentice was deciding where to begin. With a growing awareness of different systems approaches and a requirement to apply several of them in practice, I initially found myself looking for problematic situations and then wondering which methodology might fit.   Things took a different turn when my team used Rich Picturing from Soft Systems Methodology to explore our shared experience of work. The exercise revealed a number of areas of concern that resonated across the team and provided a basis for prioritising where we might focus our attention. Beyond that initial step, there was no predefined roadmap. We shared membership of a team and a desire to improve things, but the next methodological choice was far from obvious.   This session reflects on that journey and the questions it raised about how systems practitioners select and apply methods in practice. Rather than offering a formula or decision-making framework, it explores how different approaches came into view as our understanding of the situation developed.  Aimed at fellow apprentices and those curious about systems thinking, the presentation invites participants to consider what happens when we stop trying to fit situations into methods and allow methods to emerge from the situation instead.
