Systems, purpose and the pursuit of shared meaning

September 2026

Words and diagrams are the staple products of systems investigations, but how do we know what these words and diagrams mean to the people we share them with, especially people who weren’t part of the discovery process that generated them? This session will explore some of the reasons we might assume we have shared meaning when we don’t, some simple principles for growing shared meaning when it isn’t there, and an exploration of what these principles imply for systems practice in general, illustrated with content from a range of different projects.  The session will also examine the relationship between shared meaning and the broader concept of “purpose”, and what this might mean for the way we relate to other “systems-oriented” colleagues, disciplines and communities.
