Viable Futures - Cybernetic governance, imagination and many worlds
We live in times where the end of human civilization is commonly held to be a plausible near-term prospect. It is increasingly clear how our existing institutions, structures and governance are creating and reinforcing existential threats to all life on earth. Even so, many people claim that this is inevitable, or that they can’t imagine things being otherwise. This failure of imagination risks being a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Cybernetic governance and the Viable System Model offer radically different ways of seeing our institutions that have great potential to improve our organisations, our lives, and our species’ strategic fit with our homeworld. This talk presents reflections from a public sector practitioner on creating the cognitive, conceptual and cultural preconditions for meaningful positive change, including how to engage delivery-driven colleagues in systemic concepts of viability, shifting mindsets around governance, using imagination, creativity and fun to explore societal-self-governance, and the possibilities presented by the many worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics.
