VSM - starting with a blank piece of paper
Case study: how a blank sheet of paper and 53 minutes working with the Viable System Model (VSM) kept Shepton Mallet Community Bookshop open for ten more years. Shepton Mallet Community Bookshop is a volunteer-run social enterprise in a small Somerset market town, selling donated books and reinvesting the surplus into community initiatives — £44,000 in its first four years. When Sheena, the volunteer leading the enterprise, told the speaker (a friend and VSM practitioner) that she thought she would have to close the bookshop because too much had changed and she wasn't sure she could keep leading it, the speaker suggested a coffee and a drawing pad. Together they built a VSM diagnostic model, working through where Sheena's expertise could focus and where extra resources could support operational and metasystem roles — a process that took 53 minutes. Two weeks later, Sheena announced the bookshop would stay open for five years; she has since revised that to fifteen, 'because I am enjoying it so much more.' A recent review of the 2024 model shows how ongoing VSM-structured reflection has underpinned both her personal and the organisation's transformation.
