Navigating problems, revealing systems, and asking beautiful questions in a radically shifting world
James Stauch spoke about his recently published book, The 55 Minutes, the title of which draws inspiration from Albert Einstein's aphorism about spending 55 minutes defining a problem. The book helps fill a gap between scholarly insight - which can be less accessible to practitioners - and the experience-informed practice of systems understanding within a wide range of organizational, industry, and community contexts. It is an appeal to deeply understanding complex problems and the systems that create and sustain them before rushing to solutions. It outlines a range of tools and frameworks across Foundations and Tools sections to help practitioners in any sector navigate complexity, develop systems awareness, and integrate diverse perspectives, including insight from Indigenous knowledge systems (arguing that systems thinking is fundamentally not new to most human cultures and societies). It challenges the prevailing "solutions-driven" culture by emphasizing that action and learning are in constant dialogue.
